Notes

Majak Bredell was born in 1945 in Kroonstad, South Africa. She graduated with a degree in Art and Design from the Kroonstad Technical College in 1962 and studied at the Johannesburg Art School from 1963 to 1965. Initially working as a graphic designer and fashion illustrator, she later pursued painting, studying figure and form at George Boys Studio. In 1981, she emigrated to New York, where she combined visual art with poetry, bookmaking, and feminist critique, exhibiting widely and teaching at Pratt Institute. Returning to South Africa in 2004, Bredell has continued producing major bodies of work exploring mythology, religion, feminism, and ecological interconnectedness.
