About this Item

South African 1951-
Shine
paper pulp and pigment, in a Perspex box
85 by 102cm excluding frame; the Perspex box: 90,5 by 105 by 7cm

Notes

"My handmade paper resulted from a need to find an alternative means of expression for the abstract concepts that I had previously explored in painting. My interest in textiles, as invested with cultural meaning, also influenced my practice . Cotton pulp impregnated with pigment and superimposed over parallel strands of thread, that were torn from the piece in process, created a heavily textured surface that revealed the colours beneath. The rectangle was sometimes extended into a shape to take on the work beyond the two dimensional convention ."-Lynda Ballen, 2025.

Lynda Ballen holds a Fine Arts degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and a master's in arts education from New York University.
She has taught at a range of institutions in Johannesburg, including the Johannesburg Art Foundation, Waverley Girls High School and
Damelin College.

A passionate advocate for arts education, Ballen played a key role in creating opportunities for students who were unable to study art at their schools, providing classes, portfolio guidance and mentorship.

She has participated in numerous group exhibitions across South Africa, with a notable solo show, Concerning Preciousness at David Krut Projects in 2012 and has continued to be involved in a variety of artistic projects since.
