This auction features the notable private Cape silver collection of Mary Eleanor Hibbert assembled over many decades and featuring rare pieces, including a double beaker, alms dish, sugar bowls, snuff boxes and 18ct gold clasps from the golden age of Cape silversmithing. Master silversmiths included in this collection are Willem Godfried Lotter, Lawrence Holme Twentyman, Johannes Casparus Lotter, Johan Hendrik Vos and Jan Lotter.

About this Item

Cape Colony
A Cape silver salver, Daniel Heinrich Schmidt, c. 1768-1811
circular, the stepped rim applied with a rope-twist border, raised on three feet, 445g, 23cm diameter

Notes

Daniel Heinrich Schmidt, born in 1741 in Strelitz, Germany, arrived at the Cape in 1768 as a soldier. From that year until 1778, he served as a sword-cutler with the Dutch East India Company. In 1779, he was granted burgher rights as a silversmith. He married Helena Elizabeth Bastroo on 26 September 1779 and continued his trade until 1811. Schmidt passed away on 29 December 1811.
