Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2016
‘Enticingly fragrant, this opens with heady aromas of rose, violet, new leather, truffle and balsamic whiffs of camphor. Vibrant and focused, the chiseled, elegant palate is all about finesse, delivering bright red cherry, orange zest, licorice and white pepper framed in taut, refined tannins. Bright acidity keeps it superbly balanced and fresh. It’s already drinking beautifully but hold for even more complexity. 2024–2036.’ - Kerin O'Keefe, kerinokeefe.com, 99/100 (Dec 2024)
‘The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is youthfully coy in the glass, slowly opening with a delicate blend of smoked meats, cedar dust, crushed rocks and dried strawberries. It’s soft and enveloping with silky textures, a sweet and sour interplay of mineral-tinged berries and balsamic spice hints. Fine tannins mount toward the close. This finishes youthfully tense and grippy with a bump of residual acidity to balance its saturation of primary components. The 2016 is in an odd and slightly dormant place in its evolution. 2026-2040’ - Eric Guido, Vinous, 96/100 (Nov 2023)
‘Aromas of cedar, sandalwood and black cherries with some plums. Full-bodied and very chewy with lots of tannins and a fluid fruit base behind it all, providing such beauty and precision. Real purity and focus. Give this two or three years to come together. Try after 2022, but this has a long life ahead.’ - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 97/100 (Nov 2020)
‘The Fuligni 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows balance and symmetry with plenty of primary intensity to ensure a long cellar life. The bouquet opens to dark plum, dried raspberry, spice, aniseed and grilled herb. I get a lot of Mediterranean lavender and rosemary essence. This is a mid-weight Brunello with aromas that prove elegant and buoyant. If you have visited the Fuligni estate, you may agree that it occupies one of the best positions in the appellation with open views onto the enormous expanse of the Val d'Orcia that plays out until the horizon ends. This is one of Montalcino's historic cellars with many stories to tell. Luckily for us, much of that narrative unfolds in the beauty and the elegance of a wine like this. 2024-2045’ - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Nov 2020)
Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli 2016'
A pure and focused version, with cherry, strawberry and currant fruit shaded by mineral and tobacco accents. Vibrant and harmonious, this is all about the fruit, with a well-integrated structure and terrific length on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2045.’ - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 97/100 (Jun 2021)
‘Tart cherries come together with nuances of dried flowers, citrus and old spice box as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli opens in the glass. It’s silky and round, yet a core of salty minerality creates a savory tension, as bright red berries and inner florals amass toward the close. This finishes lightly structured with tart fruits and a hint of wild herbs. The Pelagrilli comes from the winery’s vineyards in the north, where the higher content of clay adds an attractively plush weight, which, coupled with 24 months in barrique, makes for a wonderfully opulent but balanced wine. 2023-2030’ - Eric Guido, Vinous, 92/100 (Oct 2021)
Talenti Brunello di Montalcino 2016
‘Healthy mid ruby. Earthy, spicy notes hovering over concentrated cherry fruit. Elegant and supple, focused sour-cherry fruit with fine coating tannins. Great balance, freshness and transparency. 2022-2034’ - Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Mar 2021)
‘Focused and loaded with finesse, this opens with enticing aromas of menthol, graphite, rose and forest floor. Full bodied and delicious, the linear, energized palate features ripe Marasca cherry, licorice, mint and vanilla before a coffee-bean finish. Firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity provide support. 2024–2036.’ - Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, 97/100 (Jan 2021)
‘The Talenti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a balanced and symmetrical wine with bright red cherry on the one hand and pretty spice and balsam herb on the other. The wine pours from the bottle with dark color saturation and ruby highlights. It shows no signs of fading, and that bright color intensity is a common thread in this vintage. There is a good amount of Sangiovese acidity that reinforces the lifted and buoyant style achieved here. It ages in both tonneau and botte for 30 months. 2023-2040’ - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 94+/100 (Nov 2020)
