About this Item

1997, 1998 Cape Vintage Reserve
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Calitzdorp has become known as the Port Capital of Sout Africa: this little Karoo town boasts no fewer than three Cape Winemasters whose cellars produce Port of exceptional quality from traditional grape varieties, vinified in the time-honoured manner.
Carel Nel (Boplaas), cousin Boets Nel (Die Krans) and Tony Mossop (Axe Hill) each selected their choice barrel of the vintage for this blend of Masters Reserve Port. Only 2000 bottles were made per vintage.

Critics Ratings

'Very distinguished indeed, this almost opaque, plum-purple 97 is an equal-parts blend of the best 500l barrels from Calitzdorp Cape port maestros, Carel Nel of Boplaas, Boets Nel of De Krans, and Tony Mossop of Axe Hill, all three Cape Wine Masters. Peppery, spirity plums float up initially, to be enveloped by briary/dark berry fruits, smoky-oaky scents - even some liquorice - as you nose deeper. Smooth, soft chocolate and fruitcake palate kept in shape by excellent tannin. All elements in balance. Good to drink even as early as 1999, but for a crack at greatness (which our tasters believe this might achieve) lay off until 2003. Alc. 19%, sugar 95 g/l. Only 2000 numbered bottles.' - Platters SA Wine Guide 2000, 4.5*

'A serious customer, reflecting some diverse talents. The question will be asked: does the 98 sum upstage all its pedigreed parts? Perhaps not quite. Garnet-plum hues - not as deeply intense as some of its peers - with complex, choc-coated nutty aromas. Warm, ripe fruity spread in palate, including dried figs, nuts and, in finish, some wild heathery/sweet herb tastes to match the comforting alcohol. Touriga, tinta b, souzão. 18 mths 500l Portuguese oak. 97 smooth, soft, balanced. These accessible on release but probably best from 6-10 yrs after vintage. Alcs 19%, sugars 95 g/l. Only +-2000 numbered bottles.' - Platter's Wine Guide 2001, 4.5*
