The present lot is a small-scale study of a larger work of the same title, illustrated in Alexander & Cohen (1990). It depicts the young Israeli classical pianist Pnina Salzman (1922-2008) performing with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in 1948.

Acquired from the artist's widow, Countess Rosa Cecilie Karoline-Mathilde Irene Sibylla Anna zu Solms-Baruth and thence by descent.
