Olifantsfontein, South Africa 1925 - 1955
Small jug with flared rim
blue- and rust-glazed earthenware
14cm high; 13cm wide
Notes
The Ceramic Studio, renamed Linn Ware in 1940, was founded by Sir Thomas Cullinan at Olifantsfontein, a farm outside Johannesburg that had rich deposits of clay and lime. It was staffed mostly by women students from the Durban School of Art, who lived and worked on the farm. Each piece was handmade and individually double-glazed, giving the work its distinctive and characteristic luminosity for which they became renowned. The Studio closed around 1955 but left behind a body of beautiful work produced over a period of 20 years.
Provenance
The Flo Bird Collection.
