About this Item
Most forget that the great wines of Pomerol in Bordeaux, France are close to 100% Merlot. Wines like Le Pin & Chateaux Petrus that sell for thousand of rand per bottle. De Trafford have produced a Merlot every year since 1992. David Trafford worked in St. Emilion in Bordeaux in 1989 and and was inspired by the fact that some of De Trafford clay rich soils are ideally suited to the variety. They usually add a touch of Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon, but mostly find the wine to be very complete on its own. About half the grapes are grown on De Trafford's own home vineyard and the balance from the neighbour, Keermont, on similar soil.

Critics Ratings
'The 2012 Merlot comes half from the estate and half from Keermont. It has a light blackberry and raspberry bouquet that feels a little timid and needs more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with dusky red berry fruit, soft texture and moderate acidity, the one-third new oak neatly used, but it needs more vigor and vivacity on the tertiary finish.' - Neal Martin, Vinous (Aug 2018)
