About this Item

1980 Pauillac
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

The 1980 vintage label is a painting by German-born Hans Hartung (1904 - 1989), a pioneer of Lyrical Abstraction.

Rejecting geometrical abstraction, he offers painting based on the spontaneous act of applying the paint - long black strokes that seem to claw across what are often monochrome backgrounds, giving his austere calligraphic language a sense of freedom and rebellion.

His painting for the 1980 Mouton Rothschild label concentrates all the depth and explosive power of his larger works.

Critics Ratings

'Tasted alongside Lynch Bages 66, a little fatter on the nose with notes of cedar and cooked meats. Good poise and freshness. The palate has good depth, smooth tannins and quite vivacious. Full of life and vigour. Where does the concentration come from? Lovely.' - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90-92/100 (Feb 2004)
