About this Item

Pessac-Léognan, 2009
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Haut-Brion is the only First Growth situated in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, and its unique terroir has produced prized wines for close to 600 years. After a visit on May 25, 1787, Thomas Jefferson wrote in his diary; “The soil of Haut-Brion, which I examined in great detail, is made up of sand, in which there is near as much round gravel or small stones and very little loam like the soils of the Médoc.”. Typical of the Left Bank of Bordeaux, the 50-hectare property is planted to all the allowed red and white grape varieties, with the Haut-Brion Blanc often demanding higher prices than that of the red.

Producer Notes: 2009 Château Haut-Brion is full of flavour from beginning to end. It is so rich and concentrated that we are tempted to use the word “thick”. However, this thickness is in no way synonymous with heaviness thanks to a counterbalancing freshness.
2009 Château Haut-Brion is reminiscent of 2005 in terms of power, but is even more concentrated. It also has the ripeness and mouthfeel of 1990 and 1989.
To summarize, 2009 Château Haut-Brion can be said to be a cross between 2005 and 1989. We are now able to say that it is the most beautiful wine the estate has ever produced.

Critics Ratings

‘The 2009 Haut-Brion is deep garnet colored and slightly closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal sensuous notions of warm blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries and blackcurrant cordial with touches of star anise, mocha and damp soil. Full-bodied, taut and tightly wound in the mouth, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit and mineral layers with a very firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy. This needs time!’ – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 100/100 (Mar 2019)

‘This enormous young wine is among the most backward of the vintage at this early stage, with iron-clad grip holding the broad, deep core of blackberry, cassis and roasted fig notes in check for now. The finish is a torrent of dense, almost compressed layers of tobacco leaf, hot paving stone, singed bay leaf and tar that will take at least a decade to massage together fully. This one is for the kids born in 2009. Best from 2020 through 2040.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 98/100 (Mar 2012)

‘Clearly a fruit-driven vintage, where there is still loads of youth and vim. The complexity is starting to creep in now though – there’s ferrous character, meatiness, black cherry and graphite. A great showcase for what makes first-growth bordeaux special.’ – Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Aug 2019)

‘Vivid deep ruby. Knockout fruity nose offers blackcurrant, strawberry, rosemary, truffle and a stony note. Then very closed in the middle, with cabernet sauvignon-dominated flavors of cassis, cigar box, cedar and minerals. Finishes long and deep, with massive but smooth tannins and a lingering note of violet. This will need plenty of time in the cellar but should be an outstanding, memorable Haut Brion. Offhand, I do not recall a better pair of wines from any estate in 2009: millionaires will have a lot of fun trying to choose between La Mission and Haut Brion in 20 years' time.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 97+/100 (Jul 2012)

‘Solid, very structured, packed with dense and dry tannins. There is a core of acidity and darkness that gives the wine a brooding, powerful character. At this stage, it seems austere although it does have the weight of fruit typical of the year.’ – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 96/100 (Feb 2012)

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
