About this Item

Saint-Émilion, 2000
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Ausone is named after the fourth century Roman poet Ausonius who owned over 100 acres of vineyard around Saint-Émilion. The modern château and its 7 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Franc and Merlot) date back to the 18th century. Ausone holds the distinction of Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” status - and one of only two estates to hold this status since the inception of the classification in 1955. A very limited production of fewer than 2000 cases annually makes Château Ausone one of the most expensive and sought-after Saint-Émilion and Bordeaux wines.

Critics Ratings

‘Proprietor Alain Vauthier has produced a prodigious wine that captures the essence of Ausone's terroir. A saturated black/purple color is followed by sensational aromas of ink, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and that wet stones/liquid minerality characteristic. The wine has phenomenal presence on the palate as well as astonishing richness and purity. Despite its extract, power, and richness, it is remarkably light, with a surreal delicacy. It is a tour de force in winemaking and a compelling expression of this magical terroir. It should prove to be legendary, but sadly, anyone over the age of 50 will probably not live to see it come close to maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2075.’ - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 100/100 (May 2003)

'Forget all those garage wines, forget the upstarts of Saint-Emilion. When you want real class, you have to turn to Ausone. What a wine - magnificently dense and opaque, hugely rich and sensual. Yet it doesn't seem in the least decadent - for deep inside the wine is a huge backbone of ripe tannins. Keep for at least 10 years.' - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 98/100 (Jun 2003)

‘It is a great millennial Saint-Emilion with intense blackberry and cassis fruit laced with cedar and violets. Less opulent than it showed in its youth, it is a perfect marriage of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The palate even at 15 years of age is quite backward and you could argue, rather glossy. Yet there is poise here that lingers in the mouth with a brilliant mineral-driven finish. It is an Ausone that will give five or six decades of drinking pleasure but will certainly repay the more patient.’ - Neal Martin, Vinous, 97/100 (Mar 2015)

'This is like a perfectly cut piece of silk fabric. Every angle is just right, every texture great. Fabulous aromas of tobacco, mineral and cool berry fruit. Full-bodied, with loads of silky tannins and a length that goes on and on. Very racy. Very sexy. Best wine I have ever had from this estate. Best after 2010.' - Wine Spectator, 97/100 (Mar 2003)

'Lightly pruney and dusty, dried fruit. Much more demanding and 'modern' than the Cheval. Thick and demanding with a very dry finish. Not entirely comfortable as a tasting experience though certainly impressive. Probably just needs a bit more time but I would not counsel opening a botte of Ausone 2000 yet...' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Mar 2010)

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
