About this Item

Iron Syrah, 2017
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

Grapes for the Iron Syrah are sourced from a single parcel of 19-year-old organically farmed dry land bush vines on the rolling hills with iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the “koffieklip” terroir – broadness and mid-palate.

Critics Ratings

'Iron has the highest clay content of the three soil-specific Mullineux Syrahs, as well as some ferrous grip, and tends to perform best in drought years. Plush, broad and complex, with palate-coating tannins, dark plum and blueberry fruit, scented oak and some clove spice from 100% whole bunches. One of a trio of superb Syrahs. 2022-32.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 96/100

'The 2017 Iron Syrah is my favorite of the four Syrahs offered by Mullineux this year. It has a wonderful bouquet of black fruit, clove, iron filings (predictabilty!) and incense that gathers momentum with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, very fine backbone and the most vigor among all their 2017's/It sports great tension on the finish and impressive persistence. Superb' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Oct 2019)

'Lily, tobacco & black pepper nuances, ferrous character from dryland Malmesbury hills vineyard with deep, iron-rich koffieklip (ferricrete) soil. 2017 less compact & athletic than siblings but has excellent muscle tone, will be stellar for next decade or more.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (95/100)

'The firm tannic structure lends plenty of support to the plum compote and bright cherry flavors, hints of star anise and accents of clove and floral. The finish is long and promising. Tight and chewy at the moment, but you can spot the aging potential by digging deeper. Best from 2023 through 2035.' - Wine Spectator, 92/100 (May 2020)
