About this Item

Hill of Roses, 2010
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Six generations of Henschke’s have made wine on this iconic estate in the Eden Valley, South Australia, the first bottled as early as 1868. Production is focused around Shiraz, but also includes a myriad of wine styles and varieties grown in vineyard sites best suited to their unique characters. These sites include vineyards in the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills. The infamous Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone are arguably the two oldest single vineyard Shiraz wines produced in Australia. Current winemaker, Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue run the estate with the help of their children, who will undoubtedly continue the family legacy.

Hill of Roses is named as a tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig (translating from German to ‘rose twig’), a member of the early Barossa Lutheran community who settled at Parrot Hill in the Eden Valley. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed have rejoiced in the riches of those efforts.

Critics Ratings

'Is it worth the price? Yes, absolutely. You are buying history. You are buying part of the most valuable vineyard land in Australia, as rare as Romanee-Conti in Burgundy, both in reality beyond price or value because they will never be for sale at any price. The use of 100% French oak gives the wine as additional point of difference from Hill of Grace, in which American oak still plays a minor role. This to one side, the wine has superb colour, a racy, superfine palate of exceptional length and the balance that is endowed by that balance (or vice versa, it doesn't matter). Drink by 2040.' - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 98/100

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
