Critics Ratings

Hartenberg Merlot 2006:
‘Gelati fans will swoon over 06’s frutti di bosco (forest fruits) tone, silky texture & refreshing ice cream aftertaste. Like 05, shows austerity not a prerequisite for seriousness. Cellar-worthy. 17 mths 55% new Fr oak.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2009, 4.5*

‘Black cherry, pepper, cinnamon and cedar on the nose offers a dignified start to this Merlot from Hartenberg. The palate is a dense, structured combination of cherry, plum and spice flavors, with layers that unfold in the mouth. The lingering finish is elegant, smooth.’ – Susan Kostrzewa, Wine Enthusiast (Jun 2009)

Jean Daneel Signature Red 2005:
‘Since last 02, shiraz (20%) added to blnd in 05, hence name change. Powerful tannins encase juicy core of plum/black berry fruit with leafy cassis note; salty liquorice jostles with oak vanilla on back-palate. Needs time. 90% new oak.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2009, 4*

Spier Frans K Smit Red 2006:
‘The 2006 Franz K Smit has a decadent, rather alcoholic nose with notes of dark plum, soy, banana skin and leather. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine balance with notes of savoury fruit, chestnut, allspice and black pepper on the finish. It handles the alcohol well, although it needs to show more complexity and finesse. Just 50 cases produced. Drink 2013-2022.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Dec 2012)

‘Confident flagship named for cellarmaster, limited btlng. 2006 departure from cab-led 2005; combo cab/shiraz (29/21), equal drops merlot, ptage, cab f & malbec. Dense, dark, well composed for ±10 yrs ageing. 27 mths new Fr brls, WO Coastal.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2011, 5*

Warwick Trilogy 2007:
'This thoroughbred blend from the cool, long-ripening 2007 vintage is all ‘cassis, tobacco & fine cedarwood complexity; firm tannic grip.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2011, 4.5*
