About this Item

2012 Radicales Libres
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

It’s a splendidly successful experiment. Five years ago, Andrea and Chris set aside some barrels of their 2012 White Blend (Chenin Blanc, Clairette and Viognier). Inspired by the marvels of traditional, long-oak-matured white Rioja, they left the barrels for five years – though topping them up regularly, as evaporation took its share.

Critics Ratings

‘Deliciously alluring nose showing incredible richness and high tone complexity. Super exotic with notes of peach tea, vanilla pod spice, lemon biscuits, orange blossom pastille, dried yellow peaches and subtle hints of barley sugar. The palate reveals incredible richness and fruit concentration where you really feel the power of the wine amplified by the process of extended, oxidative barrel ageing. There is cedar spice, creamy vanilla wood tannins but also such incredible length that the palate gives the illusion of an addition of dollop of straw, ginger, grapefruit and candied fig. Incredible expression. Drink now to 2040+. Another unicorn wine from the Mullineux’s and one of my Top 10 SA Whites of 2018.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 96+/100 (Jan 2019)

‘Inspired by a Rioja winemaker, hence the Spanish name, 2012 fits into the ‘extended barrel age’ category. Mullineux White of that vintage (chenin, some viognier, clairette) given 5 years oaking. Heady, class of its own, just 2 barrels. Superb.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 4.5* (93/100)

‘Radicales Libres - best pronounced with Andrea Mullineux’s impressive Spanish accent – is a new wine in the line up, inspired by Rioja producer, Viña Tondonia. Combining Chenin, Clairette and Viognier, it’s an oxidative style that spent five years in barrel. Saline, savoury and dry with rich, waxy intensity and pastry notes. 2019-26’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 94/100

‘The 2012 Radicales Libres undergoes and extra four years in barrel and was bottled in 2017. It is one percent alcohol and one gram or residual sugar higher that the regular bottling. It has an arresting bouquet with orange rind, fennel, broom and light peppermint aromas that is very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly honeyed texture, superb acidity, a Chenin with real bite that offsets the slightly richer style. I particularly like the depth on the finish, quite spicy with white pepper and stem ginger, just a pinch of cardamom developing. Four barrels only.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Oct 2018)
