About this Item
Marc de Grazia is the owner and founder of Tenuta Delle Terre Nere and considered by many to be the pioneer in putting the region of Etna on the map. He was the driving force behind convincing the Italian wine industry the value of demarcating Contrada within their wine producing areas. Marc is a big fan of this classification system and has integrated the model into his own lineup. According to Robert Parker, ‘Terre Nere’s wines all possessed unbelievable freshness and complexity as well as huge perfumes that suggested Pinot Noir…These wines are astonishingly complex and ethereal efforts from the hillsides of Mt. Etna in Sicily.’ Together with the ethereal Burgundian-like reds, Terre Nere also produces finely textured, powerful whites.

Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2013:
'Calderara Sottana offers more balsamic definition with wild fennel, rosemary spring, dark fruit and scorched earth. To my palate, it is the most ethereal of the bunch and the hardest to pin down given that the aromas are in constant evolution and flux. Pretty fruit and berry tones fill in the back. Despite the enormous definition presented on the bouquet, the wine is more immediate and direct in the mouth. Bright berry is followed by ash, smoke and dusty tannins. This vintage feels less complex overall but it should age nicely.' – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 91-93/100 (Sep 2015)
'A shade deeper than the Santo Spirito and more powerful on the nose. Juicy, sweet, red-fruit palate with coating tannins. Could do with a bit more time to open up more. Burgundian interpretation of Nerello Mascalese.' – Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jun 2015)
Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2013:
'This gorgeous wine opens to a dark garnet appearance with inkier colors of crimson and ruby. Crisp and crunchy tones of wild berry, cranberry, red rose and dark mineral characterize the mouthfeel. This was a difficult vintage that saw slow and uneven ripening for many producers. Marco De Grazia has evidently mastered when to harvest his fruit at optimal ripeness.' –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92-94/100 (Sep 2015)
'Palish ruby with broad, orange-tinged rim. Lovely inviting and multi-layered cherry-fruit nose with an exotic, spicy edge. Racy, red fruit with a firm structure. Ready now, and I wouldn't cling to it for too long. Wonderful depth and length.' – Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Jun 2015)
Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2011:
‘The 2011 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is slightly softer and more expansive when compared to the other single-vineyard expressions from this estate. Tannins have been incredibly well-managed and integrated within the bolder, darker quality of fruit on display. The 2011 vintage presents upfront and accessible characteristics that bode well for medium-term consumption. Drink 2016-2028.’ – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Apr 2014)
‘Bright red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, graphite, aromatic herbs and violet. Then rich, dense and suave in the mouth, offering ripe red cherry and red berry flavors and extremely silky tannins. The bright acidity gives this wine a refined, almost austere quality. Finishes very long and dry, but not drying. An absolute knockout of a wine, and the best Santo Spirito ever. Made from a higher-altitude vineyard that usually delivers very fine, silky tannins, this wine is a major success in 2011, a year in which higher vineyards were generally penalized by rainfall. If you know Barolo well--for example the wines of Monforte--then think of Etna's Guardiola like Ginestra (more fleshy and tannic), while Santo Spirito is more like Bussia (powerful but graceful).’ – Ian D’Agata, Vinous, 93+/100 (Mar 2014)
‘Accents of smoke and cured tobacco lace the black currant coulis and dried strawberry fruit in this elegant red, while refined tannins and hints of leather and black olive emerge on the finish. Drink now through 2021.’ – Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Apr 2014)
