About this Item

2014 Ramnasgras
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Considered among the new age icons responsible for the Swartland’s success, and a driving force behind the Swartland Revolution, Adi Badenhorst was one of the first to really believe in the area and purchased Kalmoesfontein back in 2008 with his cousin Hein. Over the last decade, 41 hectares of old vines, the oldest planted back in 1952, have been farmed back to glory. They practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner.

Critics Ratings

Produced only in top vintages from the oldest parcel of Cinsault on the farm planted in 1956. A stunning wine; very lifted, elegant style with a complex combination of savory, earthy aromas / flavors with cran-cherry and rose petal notes; hard ground spice, fynbos, and granite. Amazingly powerful for a light-Medium bodied wine of only 12.5% alcohol. The quality and pedigree of these old vines shining through beyond all else. Fantastic! (Ryan Woodhouse, K&L S. African wine buyer)

‘Animated 2014 from farm’s oldest cinsaut vines, bunch fermented in large old vats. Beautiful perfumes of rosepetal, red cherry & spice give way to harmonious mouthful of fruit supported by super-fine tannins, modest 12.3% alcohol; sleek & bone-dry. Underlines this cellar’s oft-made point that concentration & power aren’t needed to command attention.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 5*

‘How good can single-variety Cinsault be? Pretty bloody amazing in the case of Ramnasgras 2014 from a vineyard planted in 1956 from A.A. Badenhorst is the answer. Wild strawberry, dried rose petals, fynbos, earth, pepper and spice on the nose – all very delicate, subtle and alluring. Lovely fruit expression, bright acidity and super-fine tannins on the palate. A pleasure on every level to drink.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100 (Nov 2015)

‘Pale in colour, as Cinsault often is, this is a delicate, floral red that almost smells like a white wine and has similar levels of acidity. Wild strawberry, pomegranate, saffron and nutmeg spice, with remarkable purity, focus and length. Cape Cinsault at its best. Drink: 2015-20’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 93/100

‘The 2014 Ramnasgras Cinsault comes from a vineyard planted in 1956 and it's a superb take on the variety by winemaker Adi Badenhorst. It has an almost Pinot Noir-like purity on the nose with wonderful definition and lift - Morello cherry, shortcake, a touch of orange zest and cola. The palate is very well balanced with harmonious, refined red berry fruit. The acidity keeps this tensile from start to finish and whilst the variety means that it just lacks the substance and weight on the finish that you might yearn, it remains a bottle that you will finish to the final drop.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Sep 2015)
