About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

Established in 2008, owner and winemaker Donovan Rall is one of the driving forces behind the South African fine wine revolution. His philosophy is a simple hands-off approach, with each parcel allowed to mature and ferment naturally in order to reflect the character of each vineyard. Today his wines have a cult following and sell on allocation around the world.

'The 2017 Rall Red is a blend of Syrah, Grenache Carignan and Cinsault that is matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak. It has a perfumed, quite sensual bouquet of pressed violet and potpourri aromas entwined with black cherries and blueberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate displays very fine tannins that frame exceedingly pure black and blueberry fruit laced with truffle, Provençal herbs and white pepper. It feels very persistent as it fans out on the finish, completing an outstanding Rall Red, one of the best that Donovan Rall has produced thus far.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 95/100 (Nov 2019)
'Blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan, which Rall claims were all grown on the soils most suited to them. Dark purplish crimson. Quite inky and Syrah-dominated on the nose. Really mouth-filling – long and broad – this guy really does have the magic touch. How does he manage to squeeze so much freshness from Swartland fruit? Must be those soils. 'The Syrah down to 58% on 2017, with Carignan, Grenache, Cinsaut - winningly perfumed, but that’s just the teaser. Concentrated, dense flavours but not at all heavy, the palate with large but well-upholstered tannin structure.
