Notes

'My artworks references two quotes from The Book of Joy that resonated with me. The first quote speaks about yourself being a reservoir of joy and peace that extends to others around you.  I have communicated these ideas through my use of vibrant colour, emojis and dynamic line work. The second phrase “meaningful means'' captured my attention as it went on to explain that when possible, one must serve and assist others. This captured my idea of who Archbishop Desmond Tutu is today as a South African icon and international figure. He has always embraced his status and used it throughout his life's journey to the benefit of others.' –Ben Mphande

Ben Mphande was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Mphande completed his 3rd year of study at Artist Proof Studio in 2020. He developed his interest in art in high school. After moving to South Africa with his parents at the age of 17 he met Philippa Kotzen who became his artist mentor. His work explores the dynamics of living in the city of Johannesburg, specifically how people from other African countries navigate their way in search of a better life and financial opportunity.

Proceeds from the sale of this lot will go to the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.
