"While in Mafikeng (the capital of Bophuthatswana, now Northwest Province) [Payne] commences series of terracotta sculptures entitled The Mafikeng Heads. These works pay tribute to early stone-age ceramicists works in particular the art primes The Lydenburg Heads, unearthed in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga dating from ± 1000 BC."
