About this Item
Nom stands for nombulelo (gratitude in “Xhosa”) and Nomkhubulwane (a forgotten African goddess of agriculture). Situated at 700m altitude, the vineyard is a place where gratitude is instilled and tales appear.
Chi means “life force” and Chi stands for CHIUTA (an African rain god). Situated in the fertile Elgin valley, the picturesque vineyard site inspired the creation of this crisp, handcrafted Riesling.
65% of the blend’s fruit comes from Casey’s Ridge Vineyard, Elgin on loamy and very rocky red slate soils. (Riesling clones WR110F and vineyard was planted 2011.) The other 35% of the blend De Rust Vineyard, Elgin on decomposed Bokkeveld Shale. (Riesling clones 110 & 239 and vineyard was planted 2006.)

Critics Ratings
'Semi-dry gem celebrating the ‘life force’ doubled quantity to 450 cases in 2019. Steely, stony & vibrant, it bristles with fresh lime flavour, the few grams sugar buffed by a thrilling acidity. From cool Elgin vines. Agreeable 12% alcohol. Lovely, versatile aperitif & food partner.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2021, 4.5* (91/100)
'The 2019 Chi Riesling is sourced from Elgin. The bouquet is immediately appealing, offering lovely scents of orange blossom and quince jus, with none of the petrolly aroma that you often find in South African Riesling. The palate is effervescent on the entry and conveys a genuine sense of energy and tension. Citrus lemon mixes with orange zest and hints of elderflower, and the precise, persistent finish is pure joy. Irresistible in its youth, but I am just as intrigued to see how this might age.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 91/100 (Oct 2019)
'Grapes from Casey’s Ridge vineyards in Elgin, the nose is expressive with a floral top note before pear, white peach and green apple. The palate, meanwhile, shows good fruit concentration matched by zippy acidity – sweet upfront but comes nicely to a point.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100 (Oct 2019)
