About this Item

Saint-Émilion, 2000
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Angélus is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate on south-facing slopes in Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux. The château was so named because of the presence of church bells that could be heard chiming from the original plots of vineyards, amplified by the natural amphitheater the hill of Saint-Émilion creates. In 1996, Château Angélus, which had been classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion Classification of 1954, was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé. In 2012, the château was promoted once again to the top rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.
Hubert de Boüard has increased his marketing campaigns to reintroduce the world to Château Angélus, especially after rising to the heights of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. It has become associated with the James Bond films, a 1982 vintage featuring in Casino Royale and a 2005 in Spectre. In 2016, de Boüard's daughter Stéphanie bought her father's shares in the property, becoming sole owner. Her father remains as a co-director.

Critics Ratings

'Exceptionally deep crimson. Rather attractively ethereal topnotes on a solid core of ripeness. Very attractive package – vivacious modern wine that offers great intensity and richness without being aggressively sweet or hot. It has still got a long way to go but it can certainly deliver pleasure already. Neat and very bright and bushy- tailed.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Mar 2010)

'Medium garnet-brick in color, the 2000 Angélus comes galloping out of the glass with a powerful nose of fragrant earth, damp soil, iron ore and cigar box over a core of prunes, blackberry jam and dried mulberries. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly styled with great freshness and loads of earth and mineral-inspired layers, framed by grainy tannins, finishing with a lingering menthol lift. It is in a sweet spot for drinking right now, although it should go on for another 15-20 years.' - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 99/100 (Oct 2020).

'This shows some extraction and is very solidly built, as the core plum, black currant and fig paste flavors have flesh and density that unfurl slowly in the glass, but there's energy and freshness to match, thanks to mouthwatering ganache and licorice root notes and brambly tannins. A strong roasted apple wood element gives the finish range and length. A bit of a chest-thumper, but "it ain't bragging if it's true."' – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Dec 2015).
