About this Item
With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay, Anglo America purchased the property in 1987 and have since invested extensively in the estate’s viticulture and historic core. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Andre Van Rensburg, previously with Stellenzicht, has been at the helm of this oldest of Stellenbosch wine concerns since 1998, with advice from none other than world-renowned oenologist Michel Rolland.
Critics Ratings
‘Always serious wine, needing time to unmask rich, sweet cassis flavours lurking under oak (2 years, 70% new). Ripe, sombre 2004 perhaps even tougher in youth than usual, but promising: big, forthright, quite thickly textured. Some dry tannin on end. ’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2008, 4.5*
‘Very concentrated, dense fruit but with an attractive leafiness that makes it refreshing. Very opulent texture on the mid palate but with a certain French oak corset. Still extremely young. Lots of ripe velvety tannins and tea leaf flavours on the finish. The most youthful wine of this selection so far.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17++/20 (Jan 2015)
