This work was given by the artist to his friends the Harringtons with a collage card, sadly now lost, inscribed 'Dec. 1956. Eoni & Jack, Wishing you both a Happy Christmas – Alexis'.

According to Professor Karel Nel, although the work is unsigned, it is unquestionably authentic: 'The work has aspects of the stylised shield-like forms seen in Preller's early 'All Africa' mural for the Receiver of Revenue building in Johannesburg. The colouring of the work and its low blue horizon line is typical of the artistic devices he was developing at the time. The supporting documentation of the card to the Harringtons (now lost) and date are coherent with the evidence of their friendship and the work being gifted to them'.
