Part of the leading premium Bergkelder collection (opened in 1968), owned by Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, and discontinued shortly after the Distell merger, making these older vintages rare collectors items.
The Stellenryck Cabernets are known for their reserved elegance and low alcohols - quite the opposite of showy - and demanded patience in the cellar.
The 1980 was made by widely respected cellar master of the Bergkelder, Dr Pierre Marais, the wines were raised in small new French oak barrels (not common at the time) and further aged in bottle in the mountain cellar before release.
