He is, admittedly, the first to paint the bushveld with a knowledge and feeling that makes for first-class pictures. He was the first to solve the problem of painting the isolated thorn tree, and he was the first to show this generation that beauty was to be found on our high plateau, a thousand miles from the mountains of the Cape.
