This glorious bushveld vision, painted in the height of summer, is one of Henk Pierneef's early career masterpieces. The expressive brushstrokes and the startling colour combinations - which are a pure joy - show off the artist's sense of natural drama. Paint is smeared on lavishly, while short streaks of purple, blue and bronze define the thickets and treetops. The theatrical sky is breathtaking. The clouds are heavy, low, and made up of broad swirls of grey, turquoise and pink.
