The International Print Portfolio represents an artistic commitment to the spirit and values espoused in the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The variety of national and international prints comprising the portfolio reflects such an understanding of the values that are fundamental to human existence. They pertain not only to one country, but to the international community at large. It is exciting therefore, to see how artists from a rich diversity of cultural backgrounds, spanning a wide geographic location, have used the vitality and expressive potential of printmaking to examine the values pertaining to human rights in their countries. The work represents a firm commitment to deepening our understanding of human rights especially in a context where our collective past has been damaged by the tyranny of centuries of human oppression, the manifestations of which still remain part of our daily reality.
We pride ourselves in the belief that although this is a uniquely South African endeavour, the international identity in promoting human rights through printmaking is paramount. We pay tribute to those who continue to believe in the values and philosophy of the UDHR and dedicate this project to all those victims of human rights violations and crimes against humanity. Finally, we cherish the belief that the International Print Portfolio will serve as a catalyst for further creative and critical discourse regarding the role of art and human rights, as we enter the new millennium.
