Critics Ratings
'"A big tannin year with tip of the pinkie berries," is how Andrea Mullineux describes 2016. This is indeed a massively concentrated Syrah that wouldn't look out of place in Cornas: all blood, meat, incense and structure. Needs time. 2022-30.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 94/100
'Same winemaking for 3 Syrahs to highlight terroir: wholebunch, natural ferment, older 500L barrels/large foudres, unfined/filtered. Dryland Paardeberg vineyard, granite soils, give 2016 perfume, sleek succulence, a mineral core; Syrah reined in, taut and stylish.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2019, 4.5* (93 pts)
'The 2016 Granite Syrah has slightly darker fruit than the 2015 and is rather floral on the nose in comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and blackberry, tobacco and light graphite notes towards a spicy finish. This, I think, has the upper hand over the 2015 and is very promising.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Aug 2018)
'Dried meat, beautiful plummy fruit and firm, serious tannins. An absolutely valid threat to the northern Rhône, showing the full range of Syrah's potential.' - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Mar 2019)
