About this Item
Notes
The Egg Chair is an iconic piece of furniture designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen. It is recognised for its distinctive egg-like shape and organic form and was originally designed for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The curved shape was quite unusual for its time and it came about as Jacobsen wanted the interior of the hotel to be in direct contrast to the harsh glass and steel of the hotel's modernist exterior .
The chair was made using new materials and new construction methods - a foam shell covered by upholstery. This opened up a world of possibility for other designers at the time.
