The coastal city of Nauplion (also known as Nafplio) located in the Peloponnese in Greece was founded in antiquity and over the centuries has come under the sway of the Byzantines, the Franks, the Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire before becoming part of modern Greece during the Greek War of Independence in 1822.
