This tile was made for the Fook Island housing complex developed by the Boerstra family, which included Walter Battiss's home in Menlo Park, Pretoria. Norman Catherine was commissioned to design elements for the complex and this tile (along with others) were made by Ethan Smit who had a company which made garden pots, tiles, wall plaques etc.
