Maryke Van Velden completed her BA in Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University in 2008 and went on to do a Masters' Degree in Illustration (Cum Laude, 2012) at the same institution. In 2009 she won the Sasol New Signatures award and has since taken part in various group exhibitions. Van Velden has lectured Drawing part-time, worked in curriculum development for the Deaf and is currently employed as creative manager at Oude Leeskamer, Stellenbosch.

Van Velden has an insatiable love of drawing, in the widest sense. She approaches art-making both in an intuitive and conceptual manner. It is the therapeutic physicality embodied in the drawing process that she is most drawn by.
