Lot 265
Estate, 1998
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay, Anglo America purchased the property in 1987 and have since invested extensively in the estate’s viticulture and historic core. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Andre Van Rensburg, previously with Stellenzicht, has been at the helm of this oldest of Stellenbosch wine concerns since 1998, with advice from none other than world-renowned oenologist Michel Rolland.
This 1998 won the prestigious Comtesse Lalande trophy for best blended red wine in the world at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC)!

'(a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) Full, deep red. Aromas of blackcurrant and tobacco, complicated by a gamey element. Lush, sweet and pliant, with a wonderfully velvety texture and a complicating note of tobacco leaf. Finishes very long and sweet, with suave tannins and notes of currant, smoke and tobacco.' – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com, 92/100 (2003)
