Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. In 1980, after several years of experimentation and visits to Bordeaux, Nico Myburgh and Giorgio Dalla Cia produced the icon Rubicon. Having previously worked at Chateau Lafite, the classic 1984 was one of Nico’s final vintages before son Hannes took over the family estate. It shows remarkable energy and vinosity at 35 years and remains one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons of the era.

All vintages from maiden 1975 through to 1984 have been awarded Superior ratings. In lighter-to-medium bodied style, with delicacy and complexity of first-rate cabernet; but not in the dense, blackcurrants and billowing vanilla vogue of some New World cabernets. Patterns are now plainer … The 1984 is also exceptional, with multitude of rich flavours and ample, firm tannins for keeping … On present tasting, order of preference would be: ’80, ’84, ’81, ’82, ’75, ’83, ’78, ’76..’ Platter’s SA Wine Guide (1989)
