With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay, Anglo America purchased the property in 1987 and have since invested extensively in the estate’s viticulture and historic core. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Andre Van Rensburg, previously with Stellenzicht, has been at the helm of this oldest of Stellenbosch wine concerns since 1998, with advice from none other than world-renowned oenologist Michel Rolland.
This was awarded 5* by the 2004 Platter’s Guide and also won the prestigious Comtesse Lalande trophy for best blended red wine in the world at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), the 2nd time winning it, after previously winning it with the 1998 vintage.

‘(Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc) Saturated ruby-red. Sappy blackcurrant, black raspberry, liquorice and mineral aromas offer great verve. Dense, lush and suave, with compelling sweetness and velvety, mouthfilling texture. Finishes with superb lingering sweetness; substantial horizontal tannins spread out to coat the palate. Should make a worthy successor to the outstanding '98.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com, 92+/100 (2003)
‘Mid shaded ruby with lots of evolution at the rim. Very attractive minerals on the nose and a lovely dry finish and no excess sweetness or simplicity, Complex, mineral wine. Very Bordelais I must say – and not a hint of burnt rubber! Definitely needs food but this a very serious wine. Doesn't taste as strong as 14.5%.’ – Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 (2011)
