Notes
This portrait was painted when Bebe Daniels visited South Africa in 1937 with her husband Ben Lyon. Both were famous American theatre personalities and movie stars in silent movies and the early years of the 'talkies'. Bebe appeared in the film Rio Rita, a musical which was one of the first feature films with sound to be shown in South Africa. It was extremely popular and 'the crowds went wild' wherever she appeared in this country. Bebe also appeared in a vaudeville production at the Empire Theatre in Johannesburg from 1 October 1937.
