The artwork annotation reads:
"PAINTING BY FRANCOIS KRIGE. Snow-covered Appenine Mountain, Northern Italy. During the South African military campaign (1943-45) Francois was employed as a war artist by the Information Department and was campaigning in company of War Correspondent Jacques Botha. An overnight stop was arranged on the bank of the Arno River, where a tent was erected for Jacques and Francois. The artist decided to paint this scene on the way to Florence."
