About this Item

Straw Wine, 2013
6 (1 x 6) 375ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

The secret to Straw Wine is harvesting Chenin grapes at normal ripeness levels to capture a healthy acidity. The grapes are dried outside in the shade until they are half raisined, concentrating flavours, acidity and sugar into a super intense, but balanced treat. Fermentation is in old French barrels with indigenous yeasts and can last up to a year. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Critics Ratings

'Star amongst the Cape’s vin de paille-style dessert wines. Naturally older-barrel-fermented 2013 decadently sweet (269 g/l sugar) & viscous, threaded with chenin’s pervasive & piquant freshness. Lingering nougat, honey & dried fruit flavours drawn to long & tangy conclusion.'- Platter's SA Wine Guide 2015, 5*

'Unctuous and intense, with maple, date, dried orange peel, clove, cardamom and singed ginger notes all coursing along, backed by a hint of green tea on the finish. Chenin Blanc. Drink now through 2025. 230 cases made.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Feb 2015)

'For the very first time, Chris Mullineux told me that the 2013 Straw Wine contained some botrytis. Same as previous years, it comes from one schist and one granite vineyard and it was cropped between January 26-February 5. It delivers 268.8 grams per liter residual sugar and was aged for 12 months in fifth-fill French oak. It has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with honey, mandarin, orange peel and a touch of peach that is incredibly detailed. The palate is viscous, beautifully balanced and perhaps the purest that I have tasted since their debut in 2008. Layers of honeyed fruit infused with orange zest and mandarin, razor-sharp definition on the finish that has electricity flowing through it. Stylistically equidistant between a fine Sauternes and Tokaji, this might turn out to their best Straw Wine to date. As for the price...just how many bottles of Yquem could you buy for the equivalent. The cork? '- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Oct 2014)

'Bright tiger amber colour. Very appetising and toasty nose. Tastes relatively soft and sweet – apricots – a bit like Tokaji with extra sugar. Not that dense but very sweet and very charming, complex nose. Satisfying.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jan 2015)
