Strauss & Co is pleased to report the successful conclusion of its first live virtual auction of decorative arts in 2022.

Collector interest in works on paper by William Kentridge, notably two early drawings from the 1980s, saw Strauss & Co post a string of solid results for this renowned artist following the conclusion of Johannesburg Auction Week, which ended on 17 May 2022.

Vintage South African red wines from the mid-20th century were in high demand at Sunday’s Strauss & Co Virtual Online auction, showcasing an ultra-rare treasure trove from the Tabernacle cellar. GS 1966 reached R43,244 per bottle while the 1968 was sold at a record price of R34,140 per bottle all including commissions. Recently, Christian Eedes awarded the GS 1968, 95 points, while the 1966 famously received 20/20 from Jancis Robinson.

Not even an unpredictable national electricity grid could deter collectors from pursuing the 71 lots in Strauss & Co’s single-artist sale of works by the much-loved landscape painter J. H. Pierneef.

Cape Town Auction Week, Strauss & Co’s marquee sale of art, wine, decorative arts and jewellery, successfully concluded on 22 September 2022 with solid results noted across a number of categories.

A boutique sale of the property of a Johannesburg book designer hosted earlier this week by Strauss & Co concluded on a highly positive note with 93% of the 233 lots finding buyers.

A beloved artist among collectors, the modernist painter and printmaker J.H. Pierneef once again graces the cover of Strauss & Co’s printed catalogue for its forthcoming live sale of 19th Century, Modern, Post-war and Contemporary art, Decorative arts, Jewellery and Fine Wine, due to be held over three days from 11 to 13 April.

Two South African auction stalwarts, Anton van Wouw and JH Pierneef, topped the rankings at Strauss & Co’s first virtual-live sale of 2021 when prime examples of their work traded hands for R5.1 million each. The sale earned a total of R 59.376 million.
