Elly Holm – Van Berlyn tot Hartebeespoort – Book introduction by Prof Dieter Holm and Truida Prekel

Professor Dieter Holm will introduce his recently-published book about the life and work of his mother, artist Elly Holm. Although the book is written in Afrikaans, the presentation will be mainly in English, as it will cover topics beyond the fascinating family history in the memoir, and will introduce a unique art collection.

Elly Holm – Van Berlyn na Hartbeespoort is the story of the Kunstakademie Leipzig-trained artist who met Dr Erik Holm, a South African archaeologist and art historian, as a fellow student. They married in South Africa in 1933, and returned to Germany with the eldest two sons in 1939, as Erik had been offered a position in Berlin. Elly had to guide and eventually support the growing family through World War 2, and the post-war years. The family returned to South Africa in 1948 to very difficult circumstances. Erik was charged and convicted for treason because, as a South African citizen, he had worked at a German radio station during the war. So, artist Elly became the breadwinner, caring for a family of seven children and her mother. The family settled at Hartbeespoort, where several members of the family still live. The creativity, resourcefulness and courage of this family story, and the role of the arts as a way of life, will be highlighted in Dieter’s talk.

PowerPoint presentation. Dieter will show a never-before-shown collection of Elly’s work. Described in www.artefacts.co.za as “one of the most versatile South African artists, using eight different media,” her work isn’t well known, as it seldom comes to market. The best pieces are treasured in the homes of family members and friends. Many other works, like bronzes, murals and stained-glass windows, are in buildings or on walls – mostly in the northern provinces.

Insights, Learnings and Values from the Elly story. Truida Prekel, a family friend, who was fascinated by the book, will discuss with Dieter and the audience some insights and learnings from the book on creativity, innovation, thought processes, humour, and values and activities that strengthen individuals, families and communities.

Chamber music by members of the Holm family will add a special touch to the occasion.
