Art Club Winelands: Trees Over Time
The Evolution of Trees as Subject in South African Art
with Sean O’Toole, acclaimed writer and curator
This talk takes place alongside La Motte’s current Ateljee exhibition, Among the Trees, and explores the subject of trees in the work of George Pemba, Irma Stern, Wim Botha and Willem Boshoff. The talk proposes the tree as a durable, albeit underappreciated, motif in South African art.
Trees were a frequent and explicit subject of modernist painters JH Pierneef and Pieter Wenning. But George Pemba and Irma Stern, two pioneer painters of vastly different styles and personal circumstances, also consistently depicted trees. Stern, best known for her vibrant flower paintings and travel-influenced portraiture, painted numerous landscapes dominated by trees: from South Africa to Belgian Congo and Zanzibar.
Refreshments and Canapés will be served.
