Mpho Mokgatlhe is a self-taught South African sculptor based in Johannesburg Soweto. Originally a visual artist that has been painting for several years before experimenting with ceramics for the past 3 years.

My sculptures and pottery are a remembrance of ancient Africa in the modern age. The work is an ongoing quest of self discovery and celebration of old Africa in a world that has erased the significance of art in the life of an African as an integral part of community and spiritual practice. My clay works are aimed at reviving indigenous techniques that have been lost through time while exploring the spiritual aspect of art in Africa.

I use wild clay and minerals for painting, mostly red ocher, white clay and terracotta, currently experimenting with various rock pigments.
