Rooted: Stories Where Hair Matters

Rooted: Stories Where Hair Matters

Open Mic Poetry Night

Rooted: Stories Where Hair Matters is an open mic poetry night where guests are invited into an intimate space for reflection and dialogue.

Inspired by the sale Hair Matters: a Selection of Works from the Georgina Jaffee Collection, the evening explores hair as a powerful site of meaning – where identity, memory, resistance, intimacy, and cultural inheritance converge. Grounded in works by contemporary artists across the African continent and global African diaspora, hair emerges as medium, metaphor, and focal point of exploration.

Through poetry, spoken word, and shared stories, Rooted: Stories Where Hair Mattersextends this inquiry into lived experience. The night will feature two anchor performances to open the conversation, followed by an open mic for poets, writers and artist’s who wish to share. Guests are welcome to participate by listening, reflecting, or offering a poem in a relaxed, conversational setting.

This is a space to listen, to speak if you choose, and to sit with the stories at the root.
