Hair Matters in collaboration with Lemkus Gallery
Hair Matters is a thematic collection assembled by South African collector Georgina Jaffee, featuring contemporary artists, most of whom are either working from Africa or are of African descent. What makes this collection particularly compelling is its singular focus: every artwork explores hair as medium, metaphor, or point of inquiry, creating interesting connections and meaningful dialogue about hair rituals, beauty, glamour, colonisation, migration, and identity.
The exhibition explores multiple competing interpretations of how hair matters across cultures, histories, and artistic practices through a collection that recognises hair as a physical form of oral history, through several key themes: Historical Memory, Ritual, Self-Expression, Material and Medium.
