Boland tot Bosveld: Travels with JH Pierneef
Join us in Pretoria for drinks, canapés, and a viewing of the new exhibition Boland tot Bosveld: Travels with JH Pierneef, curated by Wilhelm van Rensburg, Senior Art Specialist at Strauss & Co.
Pierneef was an intrepid traveller, each trip motivated by a specific aim. He sailed on the German steamer, Konig, via the east coast of Africa to the Netherlands when his father, Gerrit, chose self-imposed exile during the Anglo-Boer War, 1899–1903, to train as a draftsman. He travelled throughout South Africa to give lectures about rock art in the late 1910s. He traversed the country when receiving the Johannesburg Station panels commission, 1929 – 1932. The talk focuses on what Pierneef had gained from these and many other trips, locally and abroad.
