The Wind Inscribes 'the Breath of all that is Alive' a Translation from the Stitch, Kommetjie

This piece is made using repurposed storm jib and spinnaker cloth. Materials made for the wind, salt water and the suns radiation. Over time, the elements leave their marks – imprints embedded in material memory. Bringing these two weights of sail cloth together feels interesting, two extremes in a spectrum of sail and wind. A spinnaker is a very large three cornered sail used when sailing with the wind pushing from behind. It fills and bulges and really 'holds' the wind. This force is transmitted through the rig. It drives the vessel forward and is felt through the hull and body. A storm jib in contrast is a small sail used in strong winds. It bears huge forces. It imparts maneuverability without overwhelming the vessel. It is amazing to work with all that this encompasses: wind, water, motion, fabric.
