About this Item
London
A George I silver tea caddy, Edward Gibbon, London, 1720
octagonal, with detachable cover, ball finial, raised on a flared footrim, restorations, 140g, 10,5cm high
Notes
This tea caddy's assay is likely to date to a two-week period between May 19, 1720, and June 1, 1720. It would possibly have been among some of the last silver items made and assayed as Britannia silver (95.8% silver) before the shift to the sterling silver standard (92.5%). The assay date falls between the annual date mark change on 19 May (St. Dunstan's Day) and the transition to the sterling standard on 1 June, when the crowned lion and lion passant hallmark were reinstated. This tea caddy would be a unique and valuable addition to any collection.
