About this Item

2005 Volnay 1er Cru Selection
3 (3 x 1) 750ml

Complex, elegant and long-ageing, the wines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville in Volnay are testament to one of the great domaines in Burgundy. From 1952 until his death in 2003, Jacques d’Angerville made his family domaine the flag bearer of Volnay. As Allen Meadows writes, his winemaking methods were ‘minimalist in the extreme’. A non-interventionist winemaker, as his father before him, Jacques allowed the domaine’s fine terroirs to be fully expressed in his wines. Rather putting his efforts into the vines, he trusted in great parcels and old vines of a unique clone, ‘Pinot d’Angerville’. The domaine holds four Crus: Fremiets, on the border or Pommard, Champans, Taillepieds, and the great d’Angerville monopole Clos des Ducs. Very littles has changed since Guillaume d’Angerville took over from his father in 2003. His wines possess the magic from his father’s legacy and, today, the demand for d’Angerville cuvées might even be greater than in Jacques’ day.

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs 2005
'François Duvivier’s first vintage as régisseur (estate manager, responsible for both viticulture and vinification at the domaine). Very clean aromas in the cellar and practically no sorting needed. Has been very closed. Harvest 19 September, yield 41 hl/ha, pH 3.55.
Sweet and candified on the nose. Pure and very refined. Super-polished. For some time Guillaume d’Angerville thought initially that 2005 would be like 1976 and take 20 years to come round. But it is gently softening even if there is a whole load of (fine) tannin underneath. Inky for the moment but it will presumably eventually be a very representative Clos des Ducs. Dry finish.'- Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Apr 2010)

‘An even fresher nose that is both elegant and pure, indeed airy dissolves into intense, detailed and beautifully balanced flavors that also deliver superb depth and excellent finishing persistence. This dances across the palate and while it's ripe, it remains a quintessential Volnay.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 90-92/100 (Apr 2007)

Marquis d'Angerville 1er Cru Volnay Taillepieds 2005
'On the other side of the hill from Clos de Ducs – very stony and with a bluer colour than Clos des Ducs. Very deep crimson. Some compost and autumn leaves on the nose. Very firm tannins. But masses of fruit and extract. Lots of life here. Really punchy and aggressive. In retreat at the moment' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jun 2009)

Marquis d'Angerville 1er Cru Volnay Fremiets 2005
'Fremiets is in very shallow soil near Pommard. Much deeper crimson than the Fremiet 2007 tasted alongside. Deep crimson. Still embryonic – in fact seems a bit like the 2007 but more intense. Spicy nose and rather polished tannins. Fresh and well balanced but a bit tougher than the 2007. Wait to drink but enjoy the balance. Tannins a little rasping at the moment. But great structure and life and good acidity.' -  Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jun 2009)
