Irma Stern achieved national and international fame during her lifetime. In terms of her Will, Irma bequeathed her entire collection to the Trustees of the Irma Stern Trust, giving them the responsibility for the future of the collection. The Trustees were instructed to make a core selection from her artworks and personal collection and to arrange for this collection to be permanently or temporarily housed and displayed.
After her death in 1966, the Irma Stern Trust Collection was selected by the first trustee, Professor J du P Scholtz, and is listed in the 1971 Catalogue of the collections in the Irma Stern Museum, Cecil Road, Rosebank. This collection consists of Irma’s artworks as well as her personal collection of artefacts from her travels abroad. During her lifetime, Irma successfully sold her artwork at art exhibitions and from her studio, recording these sales in her cashbook which commenced in 1935. In following with this, the Trustees, Nedgroup Trust (Pty) Ltd, have made a selection of artworks, many of which have never been displayed before, available to the public via this boutique auction. In doing so, the Trustees bring Irma’s aim of promoting Fine Arts within and outside South Africa to fruition as she wished.
